Jeffco Airport Rename
Jeffco Commissioners to Rename Jeffco Airport as Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport?
The Jefferson County Board of Commissioners announced October 10 that it will rename the Jefferson County Airport as the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport?.
The commissioners feel the airport has long outgrown its old name and image as a small remote, regional airport.
?We believe the new name will increase awareness among pilots that we are in a major metropolitan area,? said Kevin McCasky, chairman of the Board of County Commissioners. ?We are perfectly situated between Denver and Boulder on U.S. Highway 36 and Wadsworth Blvd. Set against the backdrop of the Flatirons; the airport has a panoramic view of the Front Range from Pikes Peak to Longs Peak. It is the closest airport to downtown Denver - just a 20 minute drive. Pilots can fly in for meetings in Denver in the morning and be on the ski slopes in the afternoon.?
?Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport? is very important to our county and its future,? said Commissioner Dave Auburn. ?It attracts major corporations, which offer high paying jobs. It is the U.S. base for Pilatus, one of the foremost international aircraft manufacturers, and several other successful businesses. Last year the airport contributed more than $300 million to the regional economy. We feel the new name - Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport? - will increase market awareness for our airport in the future.?
?When pilots file their flight plans from Orlando or Seattle or other cities on the east or west coast, the new name will give them a more accurate image of our airport,? said Commissioner Jim Congrove. ?Our location makes it a logical choice for both corporate and private aircraft. We now accommodate 180,000 take-offs and landings annually and have 400 aircraft based at the airport, the FAA and U.S. Customs offices are on site, and we have extensive room for expansion for aviation and non-aviation uses - more than 500 acres of land available.?
County Attorney Frank Hutfless, who oversees the airport, said he expects the name change to Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport? will go into effect early next year, when a new logo, signage and marketing plan will be completed. Jefferson County has owned and operated the airport for more than 50 years.
