Air Traffic Control Tower
NEW AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has completed the design and are beginning construction on a new Air Traffic Control Tower at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport. The new tower will be located on the south side of the airfield, east of the water tanks, which should minimize shadowing from the existing hangars and other structures.
Another improvement is that the new structure will be 125 feet tall, which should improve the air traffic controllers’ line-of-sight. The current tower stands at 53 feet high. The tower will be equipped with a new radar and communications system. The FAA hopes that the new tower will lead to less congestion and safer, more efficient procedures around Metro Airport.
An additional 7,000 square foot facility will also be built in connection with the tower for FAA office space. The contract for construction was awarded to Hensel Phelps for approximately $11 million.
