Disabled Veterans Property Tax Exemption
The Colorado Constitution was amended by voters in 2006 to include a property tax exemption on the primary residence a veteran who is 100% permanently disabled due to service on active duty either with the United States Armed Forces or as a member of the Colorado National Gurard because ordered into active military service, only if such primary residence is owned and occupied by the qualifying disabled veteran on January 1 of the year for which the exemption is sought.
This exemption and the Senior Property Tax Exemption may not be applied to the same property. A property can only qualify for ONE, either the Senior Property Tax Exemption or the disabled Veterans Property Tax Exemption, but not both.
For those who qualify, the exemption exempts 50% of a portion of the actual value of the owned and occupied primary residence from property taxes. The portion of the actual value to which the 50% exemption appliesis determined by the State Legislature. Currently 50% of the first $200,000 of actual value is exempt.
To receive this exemption, qualifying veterans must apply with the Colorado State Division of Veterans Affairs.
