Environmental History
Nestled into 110 acres of Ponderosa Pine forest and meadow, the Mansion lies the Lookout Mountain Nature Preserve. From our outdoor kiosk, follow the nature trail between the Mansion and the Lookout Mountain Nature Center. The 1-1/4 mile self-guided trail makes a circle on the property. Notice permanent signposts giving you vital information on flora and fauna and temporary signs pointing out seasonal wildflowers and plants. Watch for deer (with scrambling fawns in Spring), fox, raccoons, Abert squirrels (black or gray, tufted ear critters), and many birds. Look up now and again for spectacular views of the Continental Divide, Pikes Peak and the plains of Denver.
With assistance, wheelchairs can navigate this trail, although it is not to grade since the Mansion sits at the highest point of Lookout Mountain (7500 feet). Begin or end your stroll with a visit to the Lookout Mountain Nature Center, which is operated by Jefferson County's Open Space Division and shares our Nature Preserve. Here you can learn about the Preserve's natural systems through free, year-round exhibits or join a naturalist-guided activity. Nature trails are open 8 AM to dusk daily. Call 720-497-7600 for more information.
