  • Contractor Licensing

     

    Effective January 1, 2014 all Contractors applying for permits in Unincorporated Jefferson County are required to obtain a Jefferson County Contractors License.


    A contractor is anyone who engages in any type of work for compensation for which a building or mechanical permit is required. People who are not considered to be contractors are the property owner, a laborer working under the supervision of a contractor, a person who is performing labor or repair work on their own property, an employee of the property owner who performs full-time maintenance or repair work on the owner’s property, and state-licensed plumbers or electricians.

    Note: Unincorporated Jefferson County does not license State-Licensed Plumbers or Electricians.  

    Requirements for New Licenses and Renewals

    The requirements and conditions for issuance of a Jefferson County Contractors License include:

    1. The submission of a Contractor License application.
    2. Proof that you have passed an appropriate ICC exam within the last 3 years or provide a copy of a valid license issued from an ICC participating jurisdiction.
    3. Provide proof of lawful presence for the company applying (photo ID/Drivers License).
    4. Payment of the $50 licensing fee.

     

    Licenses are good for one year and must be renewed annually. Contractors holding valid licenses who apply for renewal cannot have any unresolved building code issues (expired permit, expired temporary certificate of occupancy, illegal occupancy, etc.) connected with building permits issued to or on behalf of the contractor licensee at time of renewal.

    Note: You must have all required documents at time of application in order to apply for your license.

    License Categories

    Testing is available on both the 2009 and 2012 Codes

    2009 N11 or 2012 W11 - Class A Contractor License

    This License entitles the holder to contract for the construction, alteration, tenant finish or repair of any type of structure permitted by the Building Code.

    2009 N12 or 2012 W12 - Class B Contractor License

    This License entitles the holder to contract for the construction, alteration, or repair of commercial buildings and single- or multi-dwelling buildings not exceeding three stories in height as permitted by the Building Code.

    2009 N13 or 2012 W13 - Class C Contractor License

    This License entitles the holder to contract for the construction, alteration, or repair of one- and -two family dwellings and accessory buildings as permitted by the Building Code.

    2009 N14 or 2009 N15 or 2012 W14 - Roofing Contractor License

    This License entitles the holder to perform roofing or re-roofing work permitted by the Building Code.

    2009 N29 or 2012 W29 - Class A Mechanical Contractor License

    This License entitles the holder to perform any work in the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning fields as permitted by the Building Code.

    2009 N31 or 2012 W31 - Class B Mechanical Contractor License

    This License entitles the holder to perform any work in the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning fields in commercial buildings and single- or multi-dwelling buildings not exceeding three stories in height as permitted by the Building Code.

    2009 N32 or 2012 W32 - Class C Mechanical Contractor License

    This License entitles the holder to perform any work in the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning fields in one- and -two family dwellings and accessory buildings as permitted by the Building Code.

     

    ICC Exam Scheduling

    If you have not taken the applicable ICC exam within the past 3 years or do not have a valid license with one of the participating ICC jurisdictions, you will need to schedule an exam. To schedule an ICC exam please contact Pearson Vue at 1-877-234-6082 or www.pearsonvue.comExternal Link Icon
