Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Important Notice
A new state law effective July 1, 2009 requires the installation of carbon monoxide alarms in existing single- and multi-family dwellings under certain conditions.
• HB09-1091 requires owners of dwelling units with either attached garages or fuel-fired appliances to install carbon monoxide alarms when the home undergoes "interior alterations, repairs, fuel-fired appliance replacement, or additions, any of which require a building permit."
• The law also requires carbon monoxide alarms be installed whenever new rooms lawfully used for sleeping purposes are added. The alarms must be installed within 15 feet of the entrance to all lawful sleeping rooms, which may require the installation of multiple alarms within a dwelling.
• The alarms must also be installed in homes offered for sale and in rental properties with a change in tenant on or after July 1, 2009.
