Coroner Facts
- The Jefferson County Coroner is elected by popular vote every four years.
- In Jefferson County, the coroner is assisted by a chief deputy coroner, deputy coroners and administrative support personnel.
- Contract forensic experts in pathology, anthropology, odontology (identification by dental records), psychology, toxicology and sculpture are available as the need arises.
- The Coroner's office is staffed by an on-duty deputy coroner every hour of the day, every day of the year.
- The Coroner's office is one of the many agencies supported by property taxes paid into the Jefferson County General Fund.
- The budget of the Coroner's office is set by the Board of County Commissioners, and is used to pay for the county morgue, staff salaries, vehicles, autopsies, laboratory testing and equipment.
