Welcome to the First Judicial District Attorney's Website, Serving Gilpin and Jefferson Counties.
|
The District Attorney's Office prosecutes those who violate state law. Colorado is divided into twenty-two Judicial Districts. Jefferson and Gilpin counties make up the First Judicial District. In the First Judicial District, the DA's Office is committed to partnering with community and law enforcement agencies to address the challenges that face our communities, particularly crime against the most vulnerable of our citizens, our children and older adults.

True story: An elderly victim of identify theft (his Social Security Number was taken from a document at a previous employer and used without his knowledge) received an IRS notice that they were refusing his tax refund request. CASE staff provided assistance in handling the identity theft as well as following up with Social Security and the IRS. The case has since been resolved with the IRS and out-of-state creditors. Colorado is ranked 5th in the country for identity theft, for the second year in a row, according to Federal Trade Commission statistics for 2005.
Colorado is one of only two states in the US without an identity theft law. Our legislature is currently considering such a law to help prosecutors more aggressively prosecute these thieves. For more information on identity theft statistics, click here.
While 24% of the identity cases reported involve credit card fraud, "mailboxing", which is stealing your mail to gain your personal information, is also problem. District Attorney Scott Storey recommends you never leave mail in your box overnight, or put outgoing mail with any personal or financial information in your box.
