Mortgage Fraud
The Denver metro area had the highest foreclosure rate in the country for most of 2006.
Many factors contributed to the 1.7 rate of foreclosure on all
homes, including mortgage fraud. Scott Storey, the District Attorney for Jefferson and Gilpin counties is fighting back. In the last 16 months Storey has charged 24 people with felonies for fraudulently buying or selling homes. Nine professionals in the mortgage industry were indicted for racketeering. Fifteen men and women who purchased homes using fraudulent documents obtained by the fraud ring were also charged with felonies.
DA Storey says, "This is identity theft, plain and simple. Many of the documents used in these criminal house sales belong to actual people. Some of the social security numbers actually belong to children."
As part of this mortgage fraud operation 191 homes were sold to 236 people in the metro area. Of those homes sold, the foreclosure rate is approximately 36%.
