Courage Coin Awarded

At a recent staff meeting Jefferson County District Attorney Scott Storey awarded Arvada Police Senior Liaison Jim Becker with the District Attorney’s highest honor, the Courage Coin.  This award is reserved for special individuals who deserve recognition for becker awarded courage coindedication and commitment to the community that goes above and beyond the call of duty.

“I can’t say enough good things about Officer Becker,” said Storey. “He has had an extraordinary impact on the lives of seniors in Arvada. He has served as Senior Liaison with zeal and passion, pouring his energy into building relationships with seniors and putting prevention practices in place.”

Officer Jim Becker has been with the Arvada Police Department since 1983 and was appointed as Senior Liaison in May 2005.  He immediately began researching safety and crime issues facing seniors. He saw the effect of crimes against seniors and found ways that he could help to keep them safe.  He recognized immediately that seniors are particularly vulnerable. He saw that when seniors are victims of crime, they tend to be more embarrassed and fearful that they may lose their independence should family members decide that they can no longer take care of themselves.

Many programs designed to empower and assist seniors in Arvada were championed by Officer Becker, including: the File of Life program, Colorado LifeTrak, Solicitor Information cards, and Survive-2-95 (senior safe driving awareness). He also produced a monthly newsletter, “The Senior Siren,” which is distributed to senior centers and retirement communities.

“Jim Becker is a dedicated police officer with more than 25 years of service to the community. Whether it’s been through his role as a DARE officer or his most recent assignment as the department’s Senior Liaison officer, Jim has had a positive impact on thousands of lives throughout his career,” said Deputy Chief Gary Creager of the Arvada Police Department.

Storey created the Courage Coin to honor those exceptional individuals whose courage and tenacity deserve special recognition. There are three different Courage Coins; one coin is for prosecutors, one coin for law enforcement and one coin is for community members.  With this coin Storey recognizes Officer Jim Becker, an extraordinary individual in law enforcement who goes the extra mile to make a difference in the lives of others.
