3rd Annual Safety Fair
The District Attorney’s 3rd Annual Safety Fair was a huge success.
On August 27, over 4,000 adults, children and seniors flocked to the Jefferson County fairgrounds to enjoy interactive exhibits, safety demonstrations and kids’ activities. Parking lots filled with fast boats and cars, fire trucks, a bicycle rodeo, recycling trucks and safety simulators created a festive atmosphere for attendees. The main exhibit hall overflowed with another 70 booths offering crime prevention tips and valuable safety information for the entire family.
One of the most popular attractions at the Safety Fair was the booth offering free consumer credit reports run by DA staff and reviewed by bank officers. The bicycle rodeo was very popular for families. Exempla Lutheran hospital gave away 500 bicycle helmets to kids who completed the bicycle safety course. Refurbished 911 cell phones were given to seniors at no
cost. CHEEZO, the mascot for the DA’s Internet Safety programs, greeted and engaged kids in Internet and cell phone safety activities. At noon, young kids enjoyed a magic show by Ronald McDonald. And the list of activities goes on.
Safety-conscious consumers brought documents to be shredded as well as small electronics to be recycled. Three semi trucks were filled with shredded documents and one entire semi was filled with small electronics for recycling.
Many county departments participated in the event, including Commissioner Don Rosier. The good natured Commissioner agreed to take part in a game of PitchBurst before he really knew what to expect. In almost non-stop games of PitchBurst, kids threw balls at a target trying to burst a water balloon over a person sitting in a chair (yes, Commissioner Rosier). In his wetsuit, in 95 degree weather, Commissioner
Rosier stayed cooler than most.
Each year the Safety Fair is staffed by DA employees and community volunteers. This year over 60 DA employees gave up a summer Saturday with their families to help bring this event to the community.
The District Attorney’s office is already making plans for next year’s event. For more information, contact Cary Johnson, 303-271-6970.
