The Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Program (DVM Program) was set up in 1995 to enable the streamlining of non-felony domestic violence cases within the court system. The goal is to shorten the time between offense and the beginning of court process or program intervention.
The DVM Program attempts to help clients gain skills in dealing more effectively with domestic violence and conflict in general. In addition, the DVM Program helps enhance safety for the victims of domestic violence and the community. This program allows for the community to be involved at a very real level with the justice process.
Referral Process
DVM Program clients are placed on the program as part of a deferred judgment and sentence, usually for twelve months, for non-felony, domestic violence charges such as third degree assault, harassment, violation of restraining order and/or any misdemeanor offense that occurs pursuant to a domestic violence incident.
Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Program Volunteers
This program is unique in that it is run almost entirely with community volunteers. At any given time, between 12 and 22 community members are active as volunteer Diversion officers within this program.
All volunteers are supervised by the District Attorney's DVM Program Supervisor. The volunteer officers supervise the DVM clients and make sure they are in compliance with the requirements of the program.
