Jefferson County’s Boys and Girls Club was created through a partnership among the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver, Jefferson County Public Schools, government officials and community and business leaders. O’Connell Middle School in Lakewood is home to the after-school club, which is open weekdays during the school year from 3:15 to 8 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays during the summer.
With school districts facing budget cuts, O’Connell was one of several Jeffco schools whose future was uncertain. Now, the school continues to serve the community.
A task force of civic and community leaders, including former First Judicial District Attorney Scott Story, started work on the project in 2007.
Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver, which operates 14 facilities, has served the area since 1961. The organization provides quality after-school programs at a nominal cost to thousands of kids ranging in age from 6-18.
"Our Boys and Girls Clubs will offer the youth of our community a menu of very positive life choices,” said Lakewood Mayor Bob Murphy.
When looking at school dropout rates, juvenile crime and substance abuse and other negative behaviors that ultimately cost taxpayers, after-school programs have proven to be cost-effective prevention tools.
