Consumer Fraud Complaints
The District Attorney's Office launched the Bad Check Restitution Program to help merchants with losses from bad checks. The program works in conjunction with American Corrective Counseling Services. First-time offenders are given the opportunity to avoid criminal prosecution by attending a mandatory, eight-hour intervention class and by paying restitution.

A check is ineligible for the program if:
If your check is ineligible for the program, you may still have remedies under the law. First, check with the sheriff or police department where the check changed hands. Determine if that organization has a Check Fraud Unit and if your check meets that agency's check fraud criteria. If the check does not meet the criteria, you can still sue in Small Claims Court or mediate through the Mediation Services Program. Generally, you will want to sue the check writer in the jurisdiction in which that person resides.
