Substitute Teacher Arrested on Suspicion of Sexual Contact

A substitute teacher at an Edgewater elementary school has been arrested on suspicion of unlawful sexual contact of a student at the school. Vincente Vitela, DOB: 8-20-65, was working as a substitute teacher at Lumberg Elementary School on February 15th and 16th when several students reported concerns to staff.

According to court records, the sixth-graders reported to school staff that Vitela made them feel uncomfortable as he was touching them and smelling their hair. One student said that Vitela had rubbed the front of his body against the back of her body while she was standing at the white board doing an assignment. Staff promptly asked Vitela to leave and terminated his substitute assignment.

During the course of the investigation it was learned that Vitela is also currently self-employed as a tutor and offers these services out of his home.
Edgewater police arrested Vitela on February 25th at his home in Denver. His first court appearance was February 27 at 10:00. Bond was set in the amount of $25,000 cash or surety. He will be back in court on March 2 at 10:00 to be advised of any charges filed against him.

If anyone has information regarding this case that may be of interest to investigators please contact Edgewater Police Detective Shawna Naumann at 303-235-0500.
