Juvenile Charged with First Degree Murder

District Attorney Peter Weir announced that a petition alleging delinquency has been filed accusing 15-year-old Miguel Angel Ita of First Degree Murder in the death of Jose Barrera-Mendoza, 22. The DA is seeking to have Ita prosecuted as an adult.

Ita was charged with a total of 18 counts including: First Degree Murder, two counts of Attempted First Degree Murder, First Degree Assault, Second Degree Assault, five violent crime counts and eight counts of Aggravated Juvenile Offender.

On April 21, Lakewood police were called to investigate a disturbance in the parking lot of an apartment complex at 285 S. Jay Street. They found that three people had been stabbed. Barrera-Mendoza died of his injuries, but the other two stabbing victims survived. Miguel Ita was arrested at that time.

Ita was in court on April 25 where he was advised of the charges filed against him. Prosecutors have filed a motion requesting a transfer hearing. The result of that hearing could be that Ita would be charged as an adult. The court will set a date for the transfer hearing. A status conference has been set for April 29 at 1:00.

Ita is being held without bond at the juvenile detention center.

The arrest affidavit remains sealed at this time.
