Romero Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Vehicular Homicide in Lakewood

Derek Roland Romero, DOB: 9-4-92, was in Jefferson County Court on February 24, 2017 to be sentenced for the vehicular homicide death of 57-year-old Frank DiSanto. Romero was sentenced to prison for 10 years.

On February 4, 2016 Mr. DiSanto was making a left turn off of W. 5th Avenue to go north on Wadsworth Blvd. when he was struck by the vehicle driven by Mr. Romero who was speeding southbound on Wadsworth.

Mr. Romero was driving recklessly, between 60-70 mph, without a license or proof of insurance.

A Lakewood Police officer was in a parking lot at 5th and Wadsworth and observed the collision.

Mr. Disanto suffered many severe injuries from the crash. He survived five days before his family took him off of life support.

“This was a tragedy that could have been prevented,” said District Attorney Pete Weir, “Driving under the influence of alcohol is always a choice. Mr. DiSanto was beloved by his family and friends and was an asset to our community.”

In November, 2016 a Jefferson County jury found Mr. Romero guilty of Vehicular Homicide - DUI (F3); Vehicular Homicide-Reckless (F4); DUI; Reckless Driving; Driving Under Restraint; and No Proof of Insurance.
