    Sixteen Years Prison for Jose Sandoval-Cruz in Arvada Vehicular Homicide


    (Golden, CO – April 21, 2017) Jose Sandoval-Cruz, DOB: 1-9-92, was sentenced today to 16 years in prison for the vehicular homicide death of 40-year-old Monica Zapata in February, 2016.

    Sandoval-Cruz was speeding southbound on Sheridan when he ran the red light at 80th and collided with Ms. Zapata’s car. Ms. Zapata was traveling westbound on 80th through the intersection on a green light. Sandoval-Cruz was traveling 55 mph in a 40 mph zone. Upon collision, Sandoval-Cruz and his two passengers got out of their car and fled on foot. They were arrested two hours later.

    Ms. Zapata died from her injuries. Her 15-year-old daughter, who was a passenger, was injured.

    Mr. Sandoval-Cruz had a BAC over three times the legal limit.

    A Jefferson County jury found him guilty of Vehicular Homicide - DUI (F3); Vehicular Homicide - Reckless (F4); Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Death (F3); DUI; Reckless Driving; Careless Driving with Injury; and Driving without a License.
