Cancer Screening for Women: Appointments

What will be done at my appointment?

A nurse practitioner will do a breast and pelvic exam, including a pap smear at the clinic. You will also receive a referral to have a mammogram done at the Exempla Lutheran Medical Breast Center.

  • A pap smear is a simple, painless procedure that can detect changes in the cells of a woman's cervix. If cervical cancer is found in the early stages, it is 100% treatable.
  • A mammogram is an X-ray picture of the breast that can detect changes inside breast tissue that are still too small to feel. Mammograms are the best way to find breast cancers while they are still treatable.
