Cancer Screening for Women- Why

Why do I need a cancer screening?
  • Both breast and cervical cancers can be successfully treated if they are found in the early stages.
  • Regular screening with breast exams, mammograms and pap smears greatly improves the chances for early detection and successful treatment.
  • Your chances of developing breast and cervical cancers increase as you get older.
  • You could be one of the 230 women who develops breast cancer or one of the 45 women who develops cervical cancer in Jefferson County this year.
  • Deaths from these cancers are preventable with early detection.

Regular screening by a physician or nurse is important because breast and cervical cancers do not have obvious symptoms until the disease is advanced and difficult to treat.
