LiveWell Wheat Ridge (LWWR) has been working in Wheat Ridge since 2005 to reduce and prevent obesity using innovative strategies to increase access to healthy foods and encourage active lifestyles. LWWR is a community coalition funded by LiveWell Colorado. We seek to apply science and evidence-informed practices to implement sustainable policies and environmental enhancements to support healthy eating and active living.

Access to Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Task Force This task force prioritizes strategies, projects and policies to increase urban agriculture, community gardens and support sustainable food systems.

Active Community Environments (ACE) Task Force This task force prioritizes strategies to promote and develop active community environments that make it safe, convenient and aesthetically pleasing for people to integrate physical activity into their daily routines through community-based education, infrastructure changes and new policies.

The Facts
Good nutrition and regular physical activity are fundamental to healthy living. According to the National Institutes of Health, sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating are linked to an increased risk of more than 20 physical ailments as well as a number of psychological problems. Specifically, poor eating and activity habits are major contributors to cancer, coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and stroke. Physical activity and nutrition are complex behaviors that are linked to the environments in Wheat Ridge, in which we live, work and play.
Currently, in Colorado 55.7% of Colorado adults are overweight and 25.8% of children are overweight. LiveWell Wheat Ridge.
Project Overview
LiveWell Wheat Ridge supports and funds various projects that will improve the walkability and bikeability of Wheat Ridge. We helped fund the City of Wheat Ridge Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. The Plan was recently approved by the Wheat Ridge City Council in the summer of 2010. To view the future proposed routes please click on link: City of Wheat Ridge Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan
In addition to the Wheat Ridge Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, LiveWell Wheat Ridge has helped fund and implement these projects:
- The Mixed Use Zone website utilized by the City of Wheat Ridge to provide information to the public on the benefits of mixed use development
- A fitness trail for older active adults at Highlands apartments in Wheat Ridge.
- Provide funding for upcoming community input sessions on the future of 38th Avenue redevelopment
- Safe Routes to Wheat Ridge Schools.
- Amend the zoning code to support urban agriculture and local food systems.
- Urban agriculture and sustainable food system assessment
- Implement an electronic benefit transaction (EBT) machine in the Wheat Ridge Farmers' Market so any food stamp recipient can use their benefits at the market.
