Zoonosis (Animal-Borne) Disease Control

Animal-borne (vector-borne) diseases continue to be public health threats. Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, Bubonic Plague, Tularemia, West Nile Virus, Western Equine Encephalitis, Colorado Tick Fever and Rabies are all diseases that can be carried by various animals and insects (rodents, mosquitoes or ticks) and then transmitted to humans. They are also more common during the summer when people tend to be outdoors more often and wild animals and insects are active.  JCPH recommends everyone help control the presence of rodents and mosquitoes around their home; and, when heading outdoors, particularly to areas where wild animals and insects are active, wear insect repellant, appropriate clothing and protect your pets from fleas and ticks. Remember not to handle sick or dead animals or animal waste. A few precautions go along way towards preventing animal-borne disease. The Zoonosis Control Program provides assistance to animal control agencies with regard to rabies; conducts mosquito monitoring and abatement activities to control encephalitis; and, performs rodent population surveillance and submits specimens for plague analysis.
