Traffic Operations

The Traffic Operations Section is responsible for day-to-day traffic signal, signage, striping, and safety operations.  We focus on addressing reported traffic concerns, as well as preventative maintenance, to maximize safety for all road users.  Together, with the Transportation Planning Section we strive to make driving in unincorporated Jefferson County safe and efficient.

What we do:

  • Investigate and address traffic safety issues reported by citizens
  • Manage traffic signal operations and system timing
  • Maintain roadway striping and evaluate its effectiveness
  • Evaluate the need for speed limit signs
  • School related traffic control
  • Make, install and maintain traffic control and street signage
  • Evaluate the need for safety improvement projects such as sidewalks, medians, turn lanes and traffic control devices.

Frequently Requested Information

1. Speed Bumps
Speed bump requests are accepted by petition, and are reviewed according to the County Speed Control Bump policy.

Please click to view a pdf of the Speed Bump Installation Standard Detail.

2. Stop Signs
The purpose of a multi-way stop is to provide safe and adequate gaps for vehicles to enter an intersection.  The County does not use stop signs for speed control.  National data concludes that the installation of unwarranted stop signs (or posting artificially low speed limits) does not reduce excessive speeding.  In fact, stop signs often provide a false sense of security for pedestrians and motorists, which increase the potential for accidents.

When considering requests for stop sign installation, the County uses Stop Sign Placement Criteria for evaluating street conditions such as street dips or bumps, locations with obscured vision, and routes children walk to school.

3. Speed Limits
CDOT's brochure on "Establishing Realistic Speed Limits" provides basic information on how speed limits are set.  Read about stop signs, a related topic, above.  Call the County if you have additional questions.  Neighborhood speeding problems should be reported to the Jeffco Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit at 303-271-KOPS (5677).

4. Pedestrian Crossings
CDOT's brochures on "Pedestrian Crosswalks" and "Pedestrian Signals" are a good source of basic information.  Please call the County if you have additional questions.

5. Traffic Signals
CDOT's brochure on "Traffic Signals" is a good source of basic information. (Note: The first page is the front and back of a printed and folded brochure.  Start reading on page 2 and continue to page 1.)  Please call the County if you have additional questions.

6. Noise Fences or Walls
The county does not build noise "walls," but a noise fence or berm may be requested, by petition, along an arterial roadway. Arterials are shown on these Major-Thoroughfare Plan maps: North Map -  South Map.  Petitions are reviewed according to the County Noise Barrier policy.

7. Overhead Street Lights
The County installs overhead street lights at select intersections on minor arterial or larger streets. Arterials are shown on these Major-Thoroughfare Plan maps: North MapSouth Map.  The County will NOT install a street light mid-block or at the end of a cul-de-sac.  When evaluating a location, we consider roadway and land use characteristics, traffic volumes, and crash history.  Street lights are installed for intersection (traffic) safety, not to reduce crime.  Individuals or Home Owner's Associations can contact the power company directly to request a new light.  Installation and electricity will be billed to the individual or HOA.

To report overhead street light outages, citizens should call the power company serving their neighborhood:
    United Power: 303-637-1300
    Xcel Energy: 303-571-2512 or 1-800-895-4999
    IREA:303-688-3100 or 1-800-637-1300

8. Deer Crossing Signs
Requests for deer crossing signs will be considered when 5 or more vehicle-deer accidents are reported to the State Patrol (http://csp.state.co.us) at a specific location in 1 year.  Call Jeffco Road and Bridge to report a dead deer or other large animal that needs to be removed from a County road.

9. Roadside Memorial and DUI Memorial Signs
Jefferson County uses CDOT's application forms.
Please call the County before submitting an application.
        Roadside Memorial/DUI Memorial Sign Form

10. Permit Parking Areas
If you live in a permit parking area, parking stickers must be obtained from the HOA or other neighborhood representative.  To establish a new "parking with permit only" area, contact us and we will evaluate the request, according to County Ordinance 5.55.11.

11. Street Closures or Use for Special Events
Please contact Planning & Zoning or go to the Special Event Permit Application, Checklist, and Block Party Permit Information on the Planning & Zoning Applications page.

12. Access Permits
Please contact Planning & Zoning or view the Access Permit Application information on their Web page.

13. Crash Reports, Traffic Counts, Long Range Plans
Please visit our Transportation Planning page

14. Truck Traffic Restrictions
Truck traffic is not restricted, even in residential neighborhoods, in unincorporated Jefferson County, unless there is a structural (bridge) deficiency.

15. Blue Light "Special"
The blue or "tattle tale" lights that you sometimes see at intersections in Unincorporated Jefferson County are installed to show the indication of the red phase of a traffic signal. The exact placement of these lights assist the Sheriff's Officer in apprehending red light violators. With the light, an officer can park down the road from the intersection and still see when a violation occurs.
