The Youth Work Program was created in 1975 by Jefferson County Open Space to provide young people with summer employment in seasonal trail maintenance and construction. County youth develop a positive work ethic by being introduced to the rewards and realities of the working community within this nationally acclaimed program. Many former YWP laborers return year after year, or become adult crew leaders.
Eligible youth must be age 14 to 18 and a resident of Jefferson County, be in good health, be punctual, prepared with assigned gear each day, able to follow verbal direction and have transportation to and from the Open Space facilities.
Applications are no longer being accepted. The deadline was March 31, 2011.
Employment begins with orientation on Wednesday, June 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. Work is scheduled Monday through Thursday beginning promptly at 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and commences Monday, June 13 and concludes Thursday, July 28, 2011. Wages are $7.36 per hour. Siblings may apply, as multiple family members will be allowed to participate in the program.
Candidates must provide documentation of citizenship, be in good health, are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Open Space facilities each workday, be punctual, be prepared with appropriate gear daily and be able to follow verbal direction. The work is hard and demanding, but it can be fun and enjoyable, too. Each YWP laborer can expect to cover 200 miles in seven weeks by hiking to and from job sites for trail maintenance.
