How does Jefferson County Child Support Services collect financial support? We use a number of remedies to collect current and past due financial support, such as:
For additional information regarding enforcement remedies, please visit the state of Colorado's webpage on enforcement remedies.
If you've never received Public Assistance (cash benefit from the county), or are not currently receiving public assistance, you're eligible to receive the amount of the court-ordered payment immediately upon collection. Once your payment is collected, your current and past due child support will be mailed to you promptly. Other benefits such as Medicaid, food stamps, and Child Care Assistance are not considered cash assistance for the purposes of child support enforcement. The amount of current support is set by court order. You cannot change this amount unless there is a modified order. Child support staff will negotiate the payment of the past debt (arrears payment) with the non-custodial parent.
Your current and past due child support will be retained by child support services. The amount of current support is set by court order and child support staff cannot change this amount unless there is a modified order. Child support staff will negotiate the debt that is owed to the state with the non-custodial parent. Once you discontinue Public Assistance, your child support, upon collection, will be promptly mailed to you.
Please note that if an intercept occurs, child support services will deduct a $25 fee. On joint returns, your money may take up to six months before it is disbursed to you. Jefferson County will not pay interest on money that is held.
You will be liable for the return of child support disbursed to you in error. If unfunded disbursements (disbursements sent in error) occur, recovery will be automatically withheld from each future payment at the rate of 10% or $10, whichever is greater.
