Over 600 professionals from across the Front Range gathered at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds on June 4th and 5th to learn about Human Trafficking and what can be done to stop Colorado youth from being sexually exploited. Human Trafficking of youth is a multibillion dollar a year industry and is the fastest growing crime, now second only to drug trade. The average age of entry into the U.S. sex trade is 12-14 year for girls and 11-13 for boys. Colorado is considered a “source state”, one that traffickers come to get the girls to take elsewhere due to the I-70 and I-25 corridors. Law enforcement, judicial, education, victim responders, mental health, medical, faith based community, human services, youth corrections, probation and other professionals joined to learn how to prevent misidentification, arrests and mislabeling of victims. “Increasing understanding and awareness about the challenges faced by states and local communities dealing with victims of trafficking and their families is critical in this combat,” says Lynn Johnson, Executive Director, Jefferson County Human Services. “Everyone must stand up to stop this abuse of our children.” Below are presentations and resources from the event. Additional training sessions are being planned. Contact Amy Terry, 720-497-7898 for more information or to be placed on the upcoming event list.
