    May is Older Americans Month

(Golden, CO) – May is Older Americans Month and every year since 1963 May has been the month to appreciate and celebrate the vitality and aspirations of older adults and their contributions to our communities.

Jefferson County is honoring our older Americans with purple ribbons displayed around the county and with a proclamation reading on May 6th, 8:00am at the Jefferson County Courthouse, Hearing Room One. In addition, the annual Senior Heroes External Link Icon event celebrating the efforts of Jefferson County's older adults who volunteer to make their communities a better place to live, will take place on May 8th at 2:30pm at Mountain Vista, 4800 Tabor Street in Wheat Ridge. Both events are no cost and open to the public.

This year Older Americans Month is focusing on injury prevention with the theme Safe Today. Healthy Tomorrow. Unintentional injuries to this population result in at least 6 million medically treated injuries and more than 30,000 deaths every year. Let’s work together to raise awareness about this critical issue, promote education and help our older Americans stay positive, active, and looking forward.

Jefferson County will continue to outpace the rest of the state in aging. By this time next year, 20% of JeffCo’s population will be 60 years or older. This is going to affect every aspect of our community from government benefits to businesses to human resources, housing, caregiving and beyond.

“As providers of services to older adults, it is critical we all embrace the knowledge, skills and abilities seniors bring to their communities,” says John Zabawa, President and CEO, Seniors’ Resource Center. “This will lead to better collaboration and resources in the coming decade as the number of seniors continue to grow at exponential rates.”
