How to sign up for cases

IMPORTANT: If you do not have a confirmed date on our schedule, DO NOT JUST SHOW UP AT COURT.  People who do follow procedures are justifiably irritated if other people get cases and they do not.  Please be respectful of your fellow mediators.

Small Claims Court - Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. in Courtroom 1B. Coordinated by Brian Beck.

court sign on buildingTo Observe - You need to observe several times before you mediate cases on your own.  Just email Brian (bbeck@jeffco.us) any time, let him know what dates work for you, and he will put you on the calendar and confirm by email.

To Mediate - Email Brian (bbeck@jeffco.us) on or after the 15th of the month to sign up for the next month's Small Claims calendar.  Tell him all days you are available (i.e., December 3, 4, 8, 9, 17 & 20), or what days of the week (i.e., Tuesdays and Thursdays) you prefer.  He will put you on the calendar and confirm your scheduled dates by email.  PLEASE remember that this is a commitment, and do not sign up if you are not sure you can do it.  Of course, if you have a genuine emergency, we understand.

If you are unsure of your schedule, let Brian know that you would like to be on the substitute list for cancellations.  He will email or call you - usually on short notice - when there is an opening.  Since it will be short notice, we understand completely if you are not available.

Division H - Monday through Thursday at 8:00 a.m. in Courtroom 1C. Coordinated by Brian Beck.

E-mail Brian Beck on or after the 15th of the month to sign up for the next month's Division H calendar.  Tell us all dates you are available as for Small Claims.  We will put you on the calendar and confirm your scheduled dates by email.  Again: PLEASE remember that this is a commitment, and don't sign up if you aren't sure you can do it.

If you are unsure of your schedule, let Brian know that you would like to be on the substitute list for cancellations.  He will email or call you - usually on short notice - when there is an opening.  Since it will be short notice, we understand completely if you are not available.

Protection Order Conditions Conferences - Coordinated by Helena Goldstein.

This is shuttle conferencing at court when the judge is hearing requests for permanent protection orders.  Before doing these cases, we will need to confirm that you have the experience necessary to handle them (specialized training in domestic violence issues).  If you are qualified, you will be added to the protection order court email list. Monthly, Helena will send the list of available dates, times, and courtroom numbers to you.  Again, please respond only if you are willing to be there.

Protection Order mediators meet once every three months for a brown bag lunch to talk about areas of interest.  Below are links to notes from some of these sessions.

Community Cases - Coordinated by Mark Loye. personquestioning

Mark sends email announcements about new cases available for assignment.  These run the gamut from dog barking to child custody to workplace disputes.  His email will include a description of the case(s) for which he is seeking volunteers.  If you would like to volunteer for one of the announced cases, respond to Mark by email.  DO NOT respond if you do not want the case.  When you receive an assigned case, be sure to confirm receipt as directed in the case assignment email.

Other Types of Cases

From time to time, JCMS seeks volunteers to facilitate a series of meetings, staff a table about mediation at a community event, mediate a small claims type case at an unusual time, and so on.  Please only respond to the staff person who sent the email if you are interested and available for the particular activity announced.

Volunteer meetings

JCMS generally holds a meeting for volunteers on the third Tuesday of odd numbered months except July.  We bring in speakers and make presentations on a variety of topics that we believe will be of interest to a significant number of our volunteers.  The meetings are from 6-8 p.m., and are held in the Ponderosa Room.  Volunteers receive an email at least one week before the meeting, with details of the topic for the evening.  These meetings are free and open to the public.

Directions

Small Claims Court signs

Small claims court is in the big building (100 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden) often called the "Taj."  After you pass through security, you turn left and head down the hall.  Because it is curved, at first you do not see where you are going.  You will come to a sign that tells you to "check in here" for small claims court.  Cases are given to mediators on a first come, first served basis.

Division H

Division H is in the big building (100 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden) often called the "Taj".  After you pass through security, you turn left and head down the hall.  Division H is in courtroom 1C.

Ponderosa Room

The Ponderosa Room is located in the same building as JCMS, 700 Jefferson County Parkway.  The entrance is on the east (courthouse) side of the building.  There is a door marked OSAC meeting room.  Enter through that door, and the Ponderosa Room is straight in front of you.

Fossil Trace Restaurant

The Fossil Trace restaurant is very near the JCMS office, and it is where we typically hold our annual Volunteer Recognition Event (in late August or early September).  From Jefferson County Parkway, turn north onto Illinois Street.  Illinois Street is just to the west of our building, between the Open Space/JCMS Building and the Human Services Building.  Go down Illinois Street to the traffic circle, go around the circle then bear left to the golf course and clubhouse.
