How to Sign Up for Cases as a Volunteer Mediator

    Community Cases

Mark Loye sends email announcements about new cases available for assignment. These run the gamut from dog barking to child custody to workplace disputes. His email will include a description of the case(s) for which he is seeking volunteers. If you would like to volunteer for one of the announced cases, respond to Mark by email. DO NOT respond if you do not want the case. When you receive an assigned case, be sure to confirm receipt as directed in the case assignment email.

    Court Cases

Natasha handles the scheduling for all court mediations.

    Protection Order Conditions Conferences (POCC)

This is shuttle conferencing at court when the judge is hearing requests for permanent protection orders. Before mediating these cases, we will need to confirm that you have the experience necessary to handle them (specialized training in domestic violence issues).

If you are qualified, you will be added to the protection order court email list. Monthly, we send the list of available dates, times and courtroom numbers to you. Please respond only if you are willing to be there.

See more information on POCC mediation.

    Small Claims Court

Small claims court cases are held in the first floor courtrooms.

    To Observe
You need to observe several times before you mediate cases on your own. Once you have observed, email Natasha (jsmediation@jeffco.us) and let her know what dates work for you. You will be added to the calendar and sent an email for confirmation.

    To Mediate
Email Natasha (jsmediation@jeffco.us) on or after the 15th of the month to sign up for the next month’s Small Claims calendar. Tell her all days you are available (i.e., December 3, 4, 8, 9, 17 and 20), or what days of the week (i.e., Tuesdays and Thursdays) you prefer. She will put you on the calendar and confirm your scheduled dates by email.

Remember that this is a commitment – do not sign up if you are not sure you can do it.

If you are unsure of your schedule, let Natasha know that you would like to be on the substitute list for cancellations.  She will email or call you – usually on short notice – when there is an opening. Since it will be short notice, we understand completely if you are not available.

Division H cases are held in Courtroom 1A.

IMPORTANT: If you do not have a confirmed date on our schedule, DO NOT SHOW UP AT COURT. Please be respectful of your fellow mediators. No mediator may “invite” another mediator or observer to court without first clearing it with the Mediation office.
