  • Volunteering for Division H

Division H is scheduled every Monday through Thursday morning, except holidays.

Division H is located in Courtroom 1A. Observers should arrive around 8 a.m. and go through the courtside security line. Courtroom 1A is located on the first floor, to the left of the elevator bank.

It is a working courtroom; please be respectful of what’s happening in the court but assertive about getting to the mediators. The mediators normally sit along the wall next to the clerk’s desk. Most have volunteer name badges that say “Mediation Services.” If you are unable to find the mediators or are uncertain, tell the clerk that you are looking for the mediators and she will direct you. Once you locate the mediator(s), please introduce yourself as a student observer.

    How to Volunteer

    To Observe

You need to observe several times before you mediate cases on your own. Once you have observed, email Natasha ( and let her know what dates work for you. You will be added to the calendar and sent an email for confirmation.

    To Mediate

Email Natasha ( on or after the 15th of the month to sign up for the next month’s Division H calendar. Tell her all days you are available (i.e., December 3, 4, 8, 9, 17 and 20), or what days of the week (i.e., Tuesdays and Thursdays) you prefer. She will put you on the calendar and confirm your scheduled dates by email.

Remember that this is a commitment – do not sign up if you are not sure you can do it.

If you are unsure of your schedule, let Natasha know that you would like to be on the substitute list for cancellations. She will email or call you – usually on short notice – when there is an opening. Since it will be short notice, we understand completely if you are not available.

A few reminders about Division H:

    • Dress appropriately.
    • We cannot guarantee that there will be any mediation cases to observe.
    • Most mediators are very open to discussing mediation and their experiences in general. After the mediation, or outside the courtroom, feel free to ask any question that you might have about a mediation you observed or how cases could have been handled in mediation.
    • Court mediations will likely differ from your textbook expectations. We consider these cases to be facilitated settlement conferences that are conducted by trained mediators.
    • If you have comments, questions or concerns, please let the JCMS staff know.
