  • Emissions

Motor vehicles are among the largest contributors to harmful air pollution that causes adverse health effects. To battle this, the state of Colorado has established a vehicle emission-testing program designed to help improve air quality in and around Denver, Boulder and the Northern Front Range. The seller is responsible for a new emission test.

    Gasoline-Powered Vehicles

These vehicles receive a four-year exemption (from model year) and are categorized in two groups (1982 and newer / 1981 and older) for emission-testing purposes.

    1982 and Newer

    • Vehicles in this category require enhanced emissions testing every two years at Air Care Colorado View exit disclaimer policy page for links to third-party websites. stations.
For locations and hours, please call 303-456-7090.

    1981 and Older

Newly purchased vehicles require a new emission test unless more than 12 months remains on the vehicle’s four-year exemption period.

    Diesel-Powered Vehicles (opacity test)

Diesel vehicles receive a four-year exemption (from model year) and are categorized in three groups (Light Duty 2004 and newer / Light Duty 2003 and older / Heavy Duty) for emission-testing purposes.

Light Duty (GVWR 14,000 or Less)

    • 2004 and Newer
An opacity test is valid for two years.
    • 2003 and Older
An opacity test must be performed each year.

    Heavy Duty (GVWR above 14,000)

    • An opacity test is valid for two years until the vehicle is ten (10) model years old and then the test is valid for one year.

Newly purchased vehicles require a new Diesel opacity test unless more than 12 months remains on the vehicle’s four-year exemption period.

Hybrid Powered Vehicles (gasoline/electric) and Motorcycles are not subject to emission testing at this time.
