Emission Inspection Changes for 2015
Motor vehicles are among the largest contributors to harmful air pollution that causes adverse health effects. To battle this, the state of Colorado has established a vehicle emission-testing program designed to help improve air quality in and around Denver, Boulder and the Northern Front Range. The seller is responsible for a new emission test.
These vehicles receive a *seven year exemption (from model year) and are categorized in two groups (1982 and newer / 1981 and older) for emission-testing purposes.
* Exemption period will transfer to a new owner only until the sixth year (from model year).
Newly purchased vehicles require a new emission test unless more than 12 months remains on the vehicle’s seven year exemption period.
Diesel vehicles receive a **four-year (4) exemption (from model year) and are categorized in two groups (Light Duty / Heavy Duty) for emission-testing purposes.
**2014 and newer Heavy Duty diesels with a GVWR of 26,000 lbs or more have a six (6) year exemption (from model year.
Newly purchased vehicles require a new Diesel opacity test unless more than 12 months remains on the vehicle’s four-year exemption period.
Hybrid Powered Vehicles (gasoline/electric) will be subject to On Board Diagnostic (OBD) testing starting January 1, 2015 and will follow the Gasoline-Powered Vehicles testing cycle.
Motorcycles are not subject to emission testing at this time.
