Advocates for tobacco prevention, including Jefferson County Public Health, Exempla Lutheran Hospital, St. Anthony’s hospital, the Jefferson County PTA, the citizen coalition and others had urged Lakewood’s Mayor and City Council to consider proven provisions that protect workers and the public more effectively. These provisions included making outdoor dining areas, all parks and recreation areas and sidewalks around hospitals smoke free. The recommendations also included prohibiting smoking inside tobacco retail businesses. In the end, the City of Lakewood adopted less stringent protections than those requested by public health advocates and by residents surveyed. Researchers Connect Reduction of Heart Attacks in Greeley, Colorado to Stronger Smoke-Free Law
Improving cardiovascular health and preventing heart attack and stroke are major focuses of employee wellness and public and community health initiatives in part because of the economic devastation of heart disease. Efforts to get people to quit smoking, reduce exposure to secondhand smoke, exercise more and improve nutrition have cross-cutting benefits, but rely heavily on individual willingness to change. Policy change, on the other hand, can have nearly immediate beneficial impacts on the health of whole populations. According to Dr. Becki Bucher-Bartelson and Dr. Mori Krantz, researchers and authors of a study on the benefits of a strong smoke-free public place law in Greeley, Colorado, the benefits may have the greatest impact on people who smoke. |
