Re: Protesters Remove Sign from North Table Mountain Open Space
Jefferson County deputies and Open Space rangers were able to effect the removal of a large sign placed by a group of 60-65 anti-abortion protesters on the slope of North Table Mountain Open Space near Golden, Colorado this morning. The group has not been officially identified.
The sign was made out of sewn-together sheets and damage to natural features on the mountain was not immediately evident. The portion of the side slope where the sign was placed is designated as a sensitive area and closed to public access by the Open Space Division.
While on the mountain, members of the group began to exhibit minor health problems due to the steep hike, heat and lack of water. Due to concerns for their safety and the desire to avoid a mountain rescue situation, Jefferson County authorities allowed them to rehydrate at the base of the mountain before returning to remove the sign.
The group’s actions did not violate any state laws and thus deputies did not issue any summonses. There were several violations of Open Space regulations however no Open Space citations were issued. The protest group was advised that future activities of this kind in Jefferson County would not be tolerated.
