Re: Burglary suspect caught by karate instructor

Jefferson County, Colorado ? On September 16, 2008 at approximately 11:20 p.m. the Jefferson County Sheriff?s Office received a call indicating that a burglar was being held by a citizen.  The caller said the suspect was seen coming out a back door of the Front Range Christian Elementary School at 6657 W. Ottawa Avenue.

 

Witnesses saw the suspect, identified as Kyle J. Torres (dob 11-21-86), inside the school and waited for him to come out.  As Torres exited out a back door of the school, witness Kevin Kowalczik confronted him and told him to get on the ground.  Torres began running and was chased down by Kowalczik.  Torres hit Kowalczik in the chest but was unable to get away.

 

Kowalczik, a karate instructor, was able to subdue and hold Torres until Jeffco Deputies arrived.  Kowalczik and several of his friends had been watching the area businesses due to burglaries in the past several months.

 

Jefferson County Sheriff?s Investigators are trying to determine the exact number of burglaries Torres has committed.  At this time, it appears as though Torres is connected to at least four other burglaries. 

 
Torres is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $5,000 bond for the following charges:

·         2nd Degree Burglary

·         3rd Degree Assault

·         Theft

·         Criminal Mischief

·         Possession of Burglary Tools
