Two inmates at the Lookout Mountain Youth Detention Facility in Golden have been sentenced to 18 years in prison for attacking a guard in their attempt to escape in February 2009.
Anthony Desean Thomas, 19, was sentenced earlier this week to 18 years in prison plus five years parole for Aggravated Robbery, a class three felony, and Assault during Escape, a class two felony.
Cedric Dupree Alston, 18, was sentenced to 18 years prison plus five years parole on November 9 for the same charges.
Both men were inmates at Lookout Mountain in the early morning hours of February 1, 2009 when they rigged their door so it would not close securely and waited for their chance to escape. A 29-year-old staff member Justin Gumo heard a noise and went to investigate. Thomas and Alston attacked Mr. Gumo with a stick, beating him in the face and head. Alston was trying to choke him by squeezing his arm around Mr. Gumo’s throat. Alston told Mr. Gumo that he was going to kill him and that he had killed before. Alston and Thomas beat Mr. Gumo into unconsciousness. They took Mr. Gumo’s keys and radio, then dragged him into their room and locked him inside.
The teens continued their escape attempt by trying to climb over the facility’s high security fence using sheets and socks tied to the stick they had used to attack Gumo. Another staff member was able to stop Thomas and Alston and hold them until Golden police arrived.
Both teens pled guilty on September 29 to the two felony counts.
