A Jefferson County jury found Kalani Opana, 55, guilty of second degree murder on May 26, 2010.
Lakewood police were called to 5300 W. Arizona Street on August 4, 2009 after Opana called 911 and reported that he’d shot his roommate, 46-year-old Roy Michael “Mike” Canavan. Opana and Canavan were roommates of Thomas Alcon who owned the house. The three men started drinking beer and vodka on the afternoon of August 3 and continued into the morning hours of August 4.
During the evening Opana and Alcon had been arguing with Canavan about the volume of the music. A fight between Opana and Canavan broke out and Opana was slightly injured. Around this time Alcon went to bed.
Kalani Opana went downstairs to his bedroom and got a .40 caliber Desert Eagle semi-automatic handgun. He came back upstairs and shot Mike Canavan one time in the chest.
Alcon was awakened by Opana a short time later. He told Alcon that he’d shot Mike.
Following seven days of trial, the jury deliberated one day before they returned their unanimous verdict.
Sentencing has been set for July 9 at 1:00. Opana faces 16-48 years in prison.
