Jefferson County Public Health held the first of its summer produce and health fairs this morning. Three-hundred and fifty low-income Jefferson County families participated and went home with potatoes, organic lettuce, mushrooms, cantaloupe and a wealth of health information.
Public health promotes healthy nutrition, including getting plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables as essential to a healthy lifestyle. The produce and health fairs are a way to share the benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables to those who may have difficulty affording it themselves. The benefits of a diet rich in fresh produce include lower blood pressure, reduced risk of heart disease, stroke and some cancers, and a lower risk of eye and digestive problems.
Two additional Public Health Produce and Health Fairs will take place on Friday, July 16, 2010 and Friday, August 13, 2010 at the Healing Waters Family Center, 6475 W 29th Avenue in Wheat Ridge, CO from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
The health department partnered with the Food Bank of the Rockies, Colorado State University Extension, Operation Frontline Colorado, Healing Waters Family Center and other community partners to make the produce fairs possible.
