Know Your HIV Status
Jefferson County, CO--June 27, 2011 is National HIV Testing Day. Across the country, public health partners will be encouraging people to take the test and take control. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 be tested for HIV at least once, as part of their routine health care. In Jefferson County, Colorado residents are also encouraged to get tested and to learn more about HIV and the current status of the AIDS epidemic.

- HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. Every 9½ minutes (on average), someone in the United States is infected with HIV.
- There are approximately 1.2 million Americans who are living with HIV/AIDS. Number of people living with HIV has risen every year because incidence is relatively stable and survival has increased
- The CDC estimates that 21% of HIV-positive people don’t know they are infected-meaning they may be transmitting HIV without knowing it.
- People of color are at a disproportionate risk for HIV infection. Nearly half of new infections (49%) were among African Americans, who make up only 13% of the U.S. population. Hispanics accounted for 18% of new HIV infections-and make up only about 15% of the U.S. population.
