Re: Seasonal Closure in effect at Jeffco's Centennial Cone Park
Park visitors at one of Jefferson County's newest Open Space Parks will encounter a seasonal closure of the Elk Range Trail at Centennial Cone Park in western Jefferson County effective Friday, February 1, 2008 through June 15, 2008. The seasonal closure is implemented in cooperation with the Colorado Division of Wildlife to help maintain the health and vitality of elk populations that use this area. The closure reduces human disturbance and allows the elk to use the land during a critical time in their life cycles with the goal of keeping the wildlife wild.
The Elk Range Trail follows an old service road, right through the highest use winter range and calving areas on the park. This closure impacts 3.2 miles of the main trail loop going from the west trailhead near Douglas Mountain Road toward the north trailhead near Robinson Hill Road. Staff have been managing this area with a seasonal closure since the park was acquired by Jeffeson County Open Space in 1999.
Centennial Cone Park is one of the largest parks in the Open Space system offering visitors a vast, backcountry-type experience. Visitors to this park need to be aware that a long loop trail experience is not available during the seasonal closure period. The park provides non-motorized trail experiences along the Travois Trail with alternating hiker/biker use on weekends. The alternating use on weekends provides access to hikers on odd number weekend days and bikers on even numbered weekend days. Equestrians are welcome every day and must access the park from the north trailhead only.
