The features of the West Chatfield project, for which Jefferson County contracted design services from Merrick & Company, are intended to significantly increase vehicle capacity at this busy intersection so drivers spend less time waiting. Phase I plans are to widen the intersection of West Chatfield Avenue and South Wadsworth Boulevard. Merrick’s engineers are currently designing Phase II Chatfield improvements west of Wadsworth.
What has been done so far?
Since mid-September construction crews have complete much of the north side of Chatfield Avenue improvements. New sidewalk, curb & gutter, and two small block walls have been placed along Chatfield, in front of the McDonald’s and at the northwest corner of the Chatfield / Wadsworth intersection.
- Crews have opened up the thru-right turn lanes for westbound Chatfield / northbound Wadsworth and southbound Wadsworth / westbound Chatfield.
- Traffic signals have been placed along span wire on the new poles for the Wadsworth intersection.
- New curb & gutter has been placed in the center median of Chatfield on both sides of Wadsworth.
- Crews have started the 8-foot high wooden fence construction along the north side of Chatfield, west of Wadsworth, and will continue through November.
What is planned for next month?
- For the remainder of October, the contractor will finish the center median by placing a concrete cover in a light brown shade and impressing a “cobblestone” pattern.
- Traffic will be shifted from the outside lanes of Chatfield toward the now-finished inside lanes during the week of October 5, 2009. Message boards, barrels and temporary lanes will be used to guide drivers through the intersection.
- Crews will then begin removal of old asphalt in the outer, eastbound lanes of Chatfield, passing by the day care center and convenience store on the southwest corner of the intersection.
- Curb, gutter and sidewalk will be placed on the south side of Chatfield. New driveways will be placed at the day care center and the adjacent residence.
- After the new road subgrade has been conditioned and compacted, asphalt paving will proceed during the week of October 19, 2009.
- Access to all businesses within the construction zone will remain open throughout construction.
