Prevent Exposure to Hantavirus this Spring
Spring season is often a time for cleaning, which is why Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) reminds everyone that there are some important steps to take to protect against the respiratory disease, Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS).  Hantavirus is carried by rodents, most commonly the deer mouse in Colorado. People can get HPS when they are exposed to infected rodents or their urine or droppings.  Not all deer mice carry the virus and there is no way to tell if a mouse is infected, thus the best way to prevent HPS is to eliminate or minimize contact with rodents.

Lakewood, Colorado Strengthens Smoking Ordinance
Jefferson County Public Health and Citizens for a Healthier Lakewood, a local coalition working to protect citizens from the harms of tobacco and secondhand smoke worked for over two years advocating for a stronger and comprehensive smoke free ordinance in Lakewood, CO.  Advocates for tobacco prevention, including Jefferson County Public Health, Exempla Lutheran Hospital, St. Anthony’s hospital, the Jefferson County PTA, the citizen coalition and others had urged Lakewood’s Mayor and City Council to consider proven provisions that protect workers and the public more effectively.  These provisions included making outdoor dining areas, all parks and recreation areas and sidewalks around hospitals smoke free. The recommendations also included prohibiting smoking inside tobacco retail businesses. In the end, the City of Lakewood adopted less stringent protections than those requested by public health advocates and by residents surveyed. The final ordinance, as passed on April 9, 2012, still leaves many of Lakewood’s citizens and employees unprotected yet it is a step toward a healthier Lakewood, CO.

Researchers Connect Reduction of Heart Attacks in Greeley, Colorado to Stronger Smoke-Free Law
Improving cardiovascular health and preventing heart attack and stroke are major focuses of employee wellness and public and community health initiatives in part because of the economic devastation of heart disease. Efforts to get people to quit smoking, reduce exposure to secondhand smoke, exercise more and improve nutrition have cross-cutting benefits, but rely heavily on individual willingness to change.  Policy change, on the other hand, can have nearly immediate beneficial impacts on the health of whole populations. According to Dr. Becki Bucher-Bartelson and Dr. Mori Krantz, researchers and authors of a study on the benefits of a strong smoke-free public place law in Greeley, Colorado, the benefits may have the greatest impact on people who smoke.

Rooney Road Recycling Makes Disposing of Household Chemicals Easy!
Have you ever looked in your garage or shed at shelves of old, half-used containers of paints, stains, pesticides, fertilizers, etc. and wondered what you could do with all of that stuff?  It can’t go in the garbage, most of it is no longer useable and dumping it down the drain or on the ground is illegal.  Many people just sigh, wish for a miraculous solution and then ignore their collection of no longer useful household chemicals.  The Rooney Road Recycling Center provides recycling and disposal services to most Jefferson County residents for common household chemicals.

Everyone can contribute to creating a healthier Jefferson County by making healthy changes. If we all make a commitment to improve our personal health and share that commitment with others around us, we can create a ripple effect from neighborhood to neighborhood. Through just one neighborhood that makes its public parks accessible, one municipality that launches a bike-helmet safety project, one group of people who join together to bring fresh foods to school, or one health center that offers a vaccination program, we can create a patchwork of public health successes across Jefferson County.
