On Friday, October 31, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office south precinct will open its doors to trick-or-treaters from 2 to 5 p.m., providing a safe place for children to visit on Halloween.
Deputies and staff at the precinct will hand out candy as well as safety-themed giveaways for trick-or-treaters.
The south precinct is located at 8100 Shaffer Parkway, near the Ken Caryl exit off C-470.
The following are safety tips for parents to share with their children prior to trick-or-treating in residential neighborhoods on Halloween.
Remind trick-or-treaters:
- By using a flashlight, they can see and be seen by others.
- Stay in a group and communicate where they will be going.
- Only go to homes with the porch light on.
- Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk.
- If no sidewalk is available, walk at the furthest edge of the roadway facing traffic.
- Never cut across yards or use alleys.
- Never enter a stranger's home or car for a treat.
- Obey all traffic and pedestrian regulations.
- Always walk. Never run across a street.
- Only cross the street as a group in established crosswalks.
- Remove any mask or item that will limit eyesight before crossing a street.
- Don't assume the right of way. Motorists may have trouble seeing trick-or-treaters.
- Never consume unwrapped food items or open beverages.
- No treats are to be eaten until they are thoroughly checked by an adult at home.
- Call 9-1-1 if they have an emergency or become lost.
- Notify a Sheriff's Office patrol deputy or call the Sheriff's Office at 303-277-0211 to report any suspicious or unlawful activity.
