Re: Annual Courage Walk Honors Victims of Crime
On Saturday, May 2, victim advocates will host the 16th annual Courage Walk for victims’ rights at Clement Park. The walk, which coincides with National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, is free and open to anyone in the community. The purpose of the walk is to honor the strength and courage of crime victims, and to honor those who lost loved ones to violence.
Victim advocates from the 1st Judicial District will join to host the event. This year’s Courage Walk will feature the Clothesline Project, a colorful display of T-shirts hand-decorated by crime victims, as a way for them to express their feelings about crime and its aftermath. Jeffco Sheriff Ted Mink and Lakewood Police Chief Kevin Paletta will kick-off the event with brief remarks.
The Courage Walk begins at Clement Park near shelter #6, which is located directly behind the Columbine library. At the conclusion of the walk, Rhonda Fields, mother of homicide victim Javad Marshall-Fields, will speak and white doves will be released to honor all crime victims.
Registration begins at 10:00 a.m., light refreshments and Power Bars will be provided. The walk begins at 11:00 a.m. The one-mile walk will begin and end at shelter #6 after completing a loop around Clement Park. The walk is wheelchair accessible and dogs on leashes are welcome.
Donations are encouraged but not required for participation in this event. Donations will be used to maintain the Courage Garden, train victim advocate volunteers and provide for the needs of crime victims. For more information or to donate, please visit the Sheriff’s Office Web site at www.jeffcosheriff.com. |
