Jefferson County, Co. – On February 23, 2010, at about 3:15 p.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to Deer Creek Middle School located at 9201 W. Columbine Dr. after receiving a call that shots were fired there.
On arrival, deputies found the lone gunman, Bruco Strong Eagle Eastwood, DOB 012178, being subdued by school staff members after he shot two students with a high-powered rifle. The shootings took place outside the school as children were being dismissed for the day.
Deputies immediately arrested Eastwood. He was transported to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for interviews, and later was booked into the Jefferson County Jail. His first court appearance was scheduled for 10 a.m. on February 24. He is currently being held without bond for two counts of criminal attempt first degree murder.
The Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the suspect attended Deer Creek Middle School as an 8th grader in 1992. Eastwood has been living on his father’s ranch in Hudson, Colorado.
Both victims — an eighth grade girl and a eighth* grade boy — were transported to local hospitals. One student was treated and released, while the other is still hospitalized as of Wednesday morning.
The Sheriff’s Office continues to conduct witness interviews, and will be on-site at Deer Creek Middle School at least through Wednesday.
*This information has been updated: previously we said that the boy was a 7th grader.
