Re: Criminals pose as Jeffco employees in recent ID theft scams
Jefferson County, Co. – Two new ID theft scams have recently been reported to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
One scam targeted the customers of an automobile repair business who carry a debt to the business. The suspect called the business pretending to be a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office investigator, stating he was investigating ID thefts in relation to the business. He convincingly asked for the contact information for three customers that had the biggest debt to the business.
The employee, convinced the caller was an investigator, provided the information. The suspect then contacted the customers and pretended to be from the business. He offered the customers discounts if they would pay the balance off over the phone by providing a credit card number. None of the customers accepted the offer.
The second scam involved a suspect calling a Jeffco citizen while pretending to be from the Jeffco courts. The caller stated the courts had been trying to reach her to update her personal information in order to send a jury summons. The citizen provided all of her personal identifying information, only later to find out that the courts never place phone calls requesting this type of information.
The Sheriff’s Office urges all the citizens and businesses in Jeffco to be cautious in providing any personal information to anyone over the phone. |
