Jefferson County, Co. – On Nov. 2, at 1:15 p.m., two off-duty Jeffco deputies were traveling on US Hwy 285 near Shaffers Crossing when they observed a man standing on the side of the road throwing large rocks at passing vehicles. By the time the deputies turned their vehicle around, two other vehicles that had already been struck by rocks stopped and were involved in a verbal altercation with the suspect.
Both deputies identified themselves as law enforcement officers and separated the victims from the suspect. The suspect showed obvious signs of intoxication and was being verbally abusive. At one point the suspect attempted to leave the scene and was stopped by one of the deputies. The suspect resisted, resulting in the deputy being injured. The second deputy, along with one of the victims subdued the suspect until additional help arrived and the suspect was arrested.
The injured deputy was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released with minor injuries.
The suspect has been identified as Jeremiah Winters, (dob 071087 - mugshot to the left) and is being held at the Jefferson County Detention Center for the listed crimes: 2nd degree assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, throwing missiles, DUI and driving under restraint.
Winters first court appearance will be at 10 a.m. on Nov. 3.
