Re: Storage unit burglars nabbed by Jeffco Sheriff’s Office

Jefferson County, Co. – On February 22, 2011 at about 1:30 a.m., Jefferson County Sheriff’s patrol deputies apprehended two men for suspicion of burglary at the Mini-U-Storage facility located at 7322 S. Carr Street.

There has been a large increase in storage unit burglaries across the metro area over the past two years. A number of these burglaries have been committed in unincorporated Jefferson County, which prompted the Sheriff’s Office to conduct additional patrols of storage unit facilities. During a routine check of one of these facilities, a patrol deputy noticed two unoccupied vehicles that appeared somewhat out of place.  Further investigation by the deputy resulted in the two suspects being apprehended. This proactive approach helped solve many open burglary cases.

Arrested were Jerod Joseph Stultz (dob 060178), and Michael Wayne Magee (dob 100278). Following the arrests, the investigation determined that the suspects may be responsible for over 100 storage unit burglaries in unincorporated Jefferson County, Lakewood, Arvada, Littleton and Douglas County.

On the evening of February 22, search warrants were served on two residences and three storage units, resulting in the recovery of truckloads of stolen items. Just a few of the type of items recovered were tools, sports memorabilia, jewelry, electronics, sporting equipment and collectables. All five agencies are working in cooperation to match the victims of these burglaries with the recovered items. Victims are asked to be patient while this process takes place. If their property is identified, they will be contacted by the law enforcement agency their report was filed with.

Stultz and Magee were booked into the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office jail on suspicion of second degree burglary. Their bond was set at $5,000 each. Mugshots and photographs of some of the recovered items are attached.
