At 11:52 a.m. Wednesday, West Metro Fire Rescue responded to Southwest Plaza mall in reference to a fire. By 11:59, firefighters had put the fire out. Firefighters found a suspicious device at the origin of the fire.
Deputies evacuated the entire mall. Multiple K-9 units are on scene; five dogs are doing sweeps of the mall. The Jefferson County Bomb Squad is en route.
When authorities believe that the scene is safe, employees and customers will be allowed back into the building. Because it is a large building, it may take some time.
All south end Jefferson County R-1 schools are in a lockout as a precaution. A lockout means there is a single point of access to each school. For more information on the schools please contact R-1.
