Jefferson County, Co. – On June 7, 2011 at about 4:00 a.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance at a home in the 8300 block of South Reed Street. When they arrived, deputies contacted a 34-year-old man who was behaving in an erratic and disturbing manner, and appeared to be under the influence of drugs.
The man refused to cooperate with the deputies’ instructions, and his behavior turned violent towards the deputies. The deputies used physical force to restrain the man. Even after being restrained he continued to fight with deputies and medical staff who had been called to assist.
Once inside an ambulance, the man suddenly stopped breathing. He was transported to Littleton Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:20 a.m.
The Jeffco Sheriff’s Office has asked the Lakewood Police Department and the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office for assistance in interviewing the deputies and medical staff in order to be transparent and forthcoming regarding the facts of this incident. The identity of the man is not being released pending notification of family members. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine cause of death.
