Jefferson County, CO. – On Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at 11:30 p.m., the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a man who said he was involved in an altercation with another driver on I-70 at Ward Rd. The victim reported a male driving an SUV pulled up next to him and pointed a handgun at him. The male suspect was later identified as Michael Hutchens (dob 030490). The victim also reported that a second car, a sedan driven by a female, appeared to be travelling with the SUV. The female suspect was later identified as Sierra Hutchins (dob 021091), wife of Michael Hutchens.
The SUV and the sedan exited I-70 at Denver West Pkwy., and entered a business park off the exit. Deputies located the two cars together, and when they attempted to stop them, both cars fled and a pursuit ensued. The suspects continued to flee on I-70 west bound, and Michael began throwing various items out of the car in an apparent attempt to slow deputies down. At the Morrison exit, the sedan collided with a deputy’s patrol car. The sedan was then stopped using a PIT maneuver, causing it to become disabled against the guard rail. The SUV pulled up next to the sedan and Sierra climbed through her driver’s side window, and into the driver’s side window of the SUV. The SUV then took off again, and Sierra began throwing more items from the vehicle as the chase continued.
The SUV exited I-70 at the Lookout Mountain exit, where it soon became stuck in the snow in a residential driveway. A short foot pursuit ensued and both Michael and Sierra were apprehended. Both were transported to the hospital after reporting minor injuries. While at the hospital, Michael attempted to escape but was stopped by a deputy.
Michael Hutchens was booked into the Jeffco Jail for felony menacing, felony eluding and attempted escape. Sierra Hutchens was booked for 2nd degree assault of a peace officer and felony eluding. Mugshots are being withheld pending photo lineups.
